We recently met with Civic Dollars Founder – Stephen McPeake, who gave us a great background update to the Civic Dollars project – an innovative way to encourage and reward time spent outdoors – using the community currency mobile app.
Stephen has been working in the technology industry for 25 years and has spent the last 10 focusing on Smart Cities solutions and citizen engagement technology including the ReportAll app and more recently Civic Dollars.
The Donegal County Council has extended the Civic Dollars project for another two years as part of the Healthy Donegal Programme. This initiative encourages residents to spend more time outdoors to improve their health and well-being. Participants can earn “Civic Dollars” by spending time in designated “Earn Zones” across Donegal, which can then be redeemed for local rewards from businesses or donated to community groups.
Since its initial launch in 2023, the project has grown from five sites to over eighty, including parks, beaches, and trails across Donegal. This expansion reflects the project’s success in promoting physical activity, mental health, and community engagement.
